Canada Needs An Indigenous Guaranteed Loan Program in the 2024 Federal Budget.

Support Indigenous Ownership
In Resource Projects

The Problem

High interest rates are preventing Indigenous communities from getting ownership in resource projects
The Indian Act prevents ownership of assets, and with no collateral, commercial interest rates offered to Indigenous communities and companies are too high.

As a result, Indigenous communities often cannot participate in resource projects.

This takes away our opportunities for stable, long term own source revenues.

And creates a bottleneck in the regulatory process, leading to long timelines to get approval.

No national program with only minimal
provincial support
There are a handful of good provincial loan programs for Indigenous ownership, but what’s needed is a national program without big restrictions on the kinds of projects Indigenous communities can participate in.
